Ingredients

For the Beef
  • 1 pound Beef Sirloin or Flank Steak Substitution: Chicken or tofu can be used for alternatives.
For the Teriyaki Sauce
  • ½ cup Soy Sauce Opt for low-sodium soy sauce for a healthier choice.
  • ¼ cup Brown Sugar Replace with honey or maple syrup for a different twist.
  • 1 tablespoon Grated Ginger Fresh ginger is ideal; ground ginger can serve as a substitute in a pinch.
  • 2 cloves Minced Garlic Use garlic powder if fresh garlic isn't available.
  • 2 tablespoons Rice Vinegar Avoid balsamic vinegar as a substitute due to its distinct taste.
  • 1 tablespoon Sesame Oil If you don’t have sesame oil, vegetable oil can be used.
For Thickening
  • 1 tablespoon Cornstarch Consider arrowroot powder as a gluten-free substitute.
For Garnish
  • 2 tablespoons Green Onions Alternatively, you can try chopped cilantro for a new flavor dimension.

  • skillet
  • Medium Bowl
  • Whisk
  • cutting board
  • knife

Method

Preparation
  1. Slice 1 pound of beef sirloin or flank steak thinly against the grain, about ¼ inch thick.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together ½ cup of soy sauce, ¼ cup of brown sugar, 1 tablespoon of grated ginger, 2 minced garlic cloves, 2 tablespoons of rice vinegar, and 1 tablespoon of sesame oil.
  3. Add the sliced beef to the marinade, ensuring all pieces are well-coated, then cover with plastic wrap. Allow to marinate for 30 minutes.
  4. Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat and add 1 tablespoon of cooking oil. Add the marinated beef in a single layer and sear for about 3-4 minutes.
  5. Pour any leftover marinade into the skillet, bring to a gentle simmer and cook for another 2-3 minutes, stirring frequently until sauce thickens.
  6. Remove from heat, transfer beef to plates, drizzle with thickened teriyaki sauce, and serve over steamed rice or noodles, garnished with green onions.
