Preparation and Baking
  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
  2. In a mixing bowl, sift together 2 cups of all-purpose flour, 1 tablespoon of baking powder, and ½ teaspoon of salt.
  3. In a separate bowl, beat together 4 egg yolks and 1 cup of granulated sugar until pale and thickened. Add 1 cup of whole milk and 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract.
  4. Gently fold the flour mixture into the egg yolk mixture.
  5. In a clean bowl, whip 4 egg whites until soft peaks form, then gradually add 1/3 cup of sugar until stiff peaks form.
  6. Gently fold the whipped egg whites into the batter.
  7. Pour the batter evenly into the prepared pans and bake for 25-30 minutes, or until golden and a toothpick comes out clean.
  8. Once baked, cool in the pans for 10 minutes before transferring to a wire rack.
  9. In a separate bowl, whisk together 1 cup of evaporated milk, 1 cup of sweetened condensed milk, and 1 cup of heavy whipping cream.
  10. Poke holes in the cooled cakes and pour the milk mixture over evenly.
  11. Whip 1 cup of heavy cream until soft peaks form and spread over the soaked cakes.
  12. Chill the layered cake for at least 4 hours before serving.
