Ingredients

For the Cake Base
  • 1 box Chocolate Cake Mix You can substitute with a homemade chocolate cake if preferred.
For the Pudding Layers
  • 2 packs Instant Chocolate Pudding Mix Feel free to use vanilla or any other flavored pudding for a twist.
  • 1.75 cups Milk Whole milk is preferred, but heavy cream can add extra richness.
For the Topping
  • 8 oz Cool Whip Swap with freshly whipped cream for a homemade version.
  • 30 pieces Crushed Oreo Cookies You can use flavored Oreos for a fun variation.
For the Drizzle
  • 1 jar Hot Fudge Sauce Can be store-bought or homemade; warming it will make drizzling easier.

Equipment

  • 9x13-inch baking dish
  • Medium Bowl
  • Large bowl
  • Microwave or stovetop

Method

Step-by-Step Instructions for Dirt Cake
  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Prepare the chocolate cake mix in a 9x13-inch baking dish according to package directions. Bake for 25-30 minutes until a toothpick comes out clean, then cool for 10 minutes.
  2. Poke holes in the slightly cooled cake with a spoon handle, about 1 inch apart.
  3. Warm the hot fudge sauce until easily pourable and drizzle it over the poked cake. Let it absorb for 5-10 minutes.
  4. Whisk one package of pudding mix with 1¾ cups of milk until smooth, then pour over the warm cake.
  5. Mix the second package of pudding with 2 cups of milk in a large bowl and refrigerate for 5-10 minutes until thick. Fold in the Cool Whip.
  6. Spread the pudding mixture over the cake, covering it completely, then sprinkle ¾ of the crushed Oreos on top.
  7. Cover the cake with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 2 hours, preferably overnight.
  8. Before serving, sprinkle remaining Oreos on top, cut into squares, and serve cold.
