Step-by-Step Instructions for Black Tie Mousse Cake
  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and prepare a 9-inch springform pan by greasing it and lining the bottom with parchment paper.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, sift together flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Add egg, milk, oil, and vanilla extract. Mix until smooth, then stir in boiling water. Pour into the pan and bake for 15-18 minutes.
  3. While the cake cools, beat the softened cream cheese with powdered sugar until smooth for both mousse layers.
  4. Combine gelatin with cold water and let sit for 5 minutes, then heat until melted. Let cool slightly before mixing into heavy whipped cream.
  5. Whip the chilled heavy cream until light and fluffy. Fold in the melted gelatin mixture and then fold into the cream cheese mixtures.
  6. Spread chocolate mousse on top of the cooled cake, followed by vanilla mousse. Refrigerate for at least 1 hour to set.
  7. For ganache, melt chocolate chips and butter together until smooth. Let cool slightly, then drizzle over the cake.
  8. Sprinkle mini chocolate chips over the ganache and serve.
