  • 14 oz Firm Tofu Press before using
  • 1/4 cup Cornstarch Arrowroot can be used as gluten-free alternative
  • 1 tbsp Nutritional Yeast Optional
  • 1 tsp Garlic Powder Adjust if using fresh garlic
  • 1 tsp Onion Powder Fresh onions can be substituted
  • 1/2 tsp Ground Ginger Preferably fresh
  • 1 tsp Salt Sea salt or kosher salt recommended
  • 1 tsp Ground Black Pepper Can substitute with white pepper
  • 1/2 tsp Red Pepper Flakes Adjust to taste
  • 1/4 cup Sesame Oil For frying
  • 2 stalks Green Onions For garnish, can use chives instead
For the Sauce
  • 1 tbsp Soy Sauce Tamari for gluten-free
  • 1 tbsp Water
  • 1 tbsp Maple Syrup Agave syrup can be substituted
  • 1 tbsp Rice Vinegar Apple cider vinegar can replace
  • 1 tbsp Black Sesame Seeds Regular sesame seeds are a suitable substitute

Method
 

Preparation Steps
  1. Press Tofu: Remove excess moisture from tofu for 30 minutes using a tofu press or heavy plate with towel.
  2. Prepare Tofu: Slice pressed tofu into 1-inch cubes; coat with cornstarch mixture evenly.
  3. Fry Tofu: Heat sesame oil in skillet; fry tofu cubes for 3-4 minutes per side until golden brown.
  4. Add Green Onions: Toss chopped green onions in with the fried tofu and stir-fry for about 1 minute.
  5. Make the Sauce: Whisk together soy sauce, water, maple syrup, rice vinegar, and cornstarch; pour over tofu.
  6. Serve: Sprinkle with black sesame seeds and enjoy hot, with rice or vegetables.
