Steps
- Melt the butter over low heat in a medium saucepan. Add the minced garlic and sauté for 1-2 minutes until fragrant.
- Add the flour to the pan and whisk to combine, cooking for 1-2 minutes to form a roux.
- Gradually pour in the milk while continuously whisking. Increase heat to medium and stir for 3-5 minutes until thickened.
- Stir in the grated Parmesan cheese until melted and the sauce is creamy.
- If using white wine, pour it in now and stir to deglaze the pan. Allow to simmer for 1 minute.
- Adjust the thickness by adding more milk if necessary, or simmer for additional time to thicken.
- Mix in the fresh herbs and season with salt and pepper to taste.
