  • 1 teaspoon Ground Cinnamon
  • 1 cup Milk Use any milk preferred, dairy or plant-based.
  • 2 large Eggs
  • 0.5 cups Melted Butter
  • 1 teaspoon Vanilla Extract Almond extract can be substituted.
  • 1 to 1.5 cups Apples (peeled, cored, diced) Granny Smith or Honeycrisp are recommended.
For Frying
  • 2 inches Vegetable Oil Any neutral oil can be used.
For the Glaze
  • 1 cup Powdered Sugar
  • 2 tablespoons Milk (for glaze) Adjust consistency as needed.

Equipment

  • Mixing bowls
  • Waffle Iron
  • Deep pot or skillet
  • Slotted spoon
  • Donut cutter

Method

Step-by-Step Instructions
  1. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the dry ingredients: flour, sugar, baking powder, salt, and ground cinnamon.
  2. In another bowl, combine the wet ingredients: milk, eggs, melted butter, and vanilla extract. Whisk until smooth.
  3. Gently fold the wet mixture into the dry mixture until just combined; a few lumps are fine.
  4. Carefully fold in the diced apples until evenly coated in the batter.
  5. Preheat the waffle iron and grease it lightly with cooking spray or vegetable oil.
  6. Spoon the batter onto the preheated waffle iron and cook for 4-5 minutes until golden brown.
  7. Remove the waffles from the iron and let them cool briefly. Use a donut cutter to shape them.
  8. Heat vegetable oil in a deep pot to 350°F (175°C).
  9. Fry the shaped donuts in batches for 2-3 minutes per side until golden brown.
  10. Transfer the fried donuts to a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil.
  11. In a small mixing bowl, whisk together powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla for the glaze.
  12. Dip the cooled donuts into the glaze, allowing excess to drip off before placing them back on the wire rack.
